The moment

In October 2017 TechCrunch brought Startup Battlefield, its flagship startup competition, to Africa for the first time, with Facebook as partner. Fifteen early-stage startups from across Sub-Saharan Africa pitched live in Nairobi to a panel of investors and founders, competing across social good, productivity and utility, and gaming and entertainment for the title of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most promising startup, $25,000 and a trip to compete at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco.

A global stage, delivered in Nairobi

At Radisson Blu Hotel, we turned the ballroom into a broadcast-ready pitch arena: a wide stage framed by green LED screens and TechCrunch’s Africa-map logo, theatre seating for investors, founders and media, and a set that worked as well on the livestream as it did in the room. TechCrunch brought its own audiovisual team from the United States, and the day depended on that team and our local crew working as one, which they did. General registration, delegate programmes and clear signage got guests in and seated, and the day ran to TechCrunch’s tight broadcast schedule across all three pitch sessions. Kenyan logistics company Lori Systems took the title.

Local delivery for a global stage

Waridi managed local delivery: venue coordination and set-up, vendor management across staging, AV, branding and catering, registration and guest management, and coordination on the day, so TechCrunch and its partners could focus on the startups and the competition.
